Kindergarten Waiting Lists Get Longer

The Department of Education on Wednesday released citywide information about kindergarten waiting lists for the upcoming school year, and, over all, the news isn’t good.

The total number of children waiting for a spot at their elementary school, 3,195, is nearly 1,000 more than there were when a similar roster was released last March. Likewise, the number of schools that have had to resort to a waiting list has grown to 157 from 112 last year, out of the roughly 700 city elementary schools that offer kindergarten.

Officials cautioned that the numbers would most likely shrink by the time charter school lotteries are held, gifted programs have announced their selections and private schools have made their offers. Still, they acknowledged that some parents would ultimately have to send their children to a nearby school that has room and not to the public school they’re zoned for.

But a Tea Party group in the United States, the Institute for Liberty, has vigorously defended the freedom of a giant Indonesian paper company to sell its wares to Americans without paying tariffs. The institute set up Web sites, published reports and organized a petition drive attacking American businesses, unions and environmentalists critical of the company, Asia Pulp & Paper.

Last fall, the institute’s president, Andrew Langer, had himself videotaped on Long Wharf in Boston holding a copy of the Declaration of Independence as he compared Washington’s proposed tariff on paper from Indonesia and China to Britain’s colonial trade policies in 1776.

Tariff-free Asian paper may seem an unlikely cause for a nonprofit Tea Party group. But it is in keeping with a succession of pro-business campaigns — promoting commercial space flight, palm oil imports and genetically modified alfalfa — that have occupied the Institute for Liberty’s recent agenda.

Treasury did not, however, commemorate the hundreds of billions of dollars in taxpayer aid left to be repaid; the billions the Troubled Asset Relief Program will ultimately cost taxpayers; the extraordinary actions of the Federal Reserve and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation that made Treasury's bank profits possible; or the fact that the entire enterprise of pumping taxpayer cash into a financial system rife with unrecognized losses will likely be remembered as a "dismal failure," in at least one Nobel Prize-winning economist's estimation.

What Is Spencer Bachus's Game?

With regard to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), this apparently now implies that Mr. Bachus will use any means possible to change the topic away from substance – how banks treat their customers – to imagined procedural issues.

Specifically, Mr. Bachus is wrongly accusing Elizabeth Warren of misleading Congress with regard to the role of the CFPB in the negotiations over how to settle allegations that mortgage foreclosure practices have been abusive (see also this news coverage).

On March 16, 2011, Ms. Warren told the House subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit that the CFPB provided advice in these negotiations. Mr. Bachus and his colleagues have just discovered some specific slides that were apparently used as part of this advice.

Impressed by the lucidity of these seven (7) slides, Mr. Bachus and Ms. Shelley Moore Capito (chair of that subcommittee) have jumped to the conclusion that the CFPB must be the primary architect of the government’s position.

Biden Heads To Hill As Roadmap For Government Funding Resolution Emerges

Vice President Joseph Biden is meeting with Senate Democratic leadership Wednesday night in an effort to get officials on the same page concerning budget negotiations and plot out the next, crucial steps in talks with House Republicans.

The Vice President’s visit comes as a once dire-looking outlook over the state of funding discussions has turned a bit brighter. Democratic aides on Capitol Hill say that the two political parties now only stand a mere $6 billion apart on the size of spending cuts they will support and have an informal process in place to close that gap

According to a top Senate Democratic aide, the party has submitted a plan to House GOP leadership identifying an additional $20 billion in cuts it is willing to make on top of the $10 billion in cuts it has already passed in the form of stop-gap funding measures. The breakdown of the cuts is roughly 75 percent discretionary spending and 25 percent mandatory spending, mainly from Medicare subsidies.

The party is now awaiting a similar proposal from House Republicans that would pinpoint $36 billion in cuts that they prefer. “At the point that these are ready” the aide said, “the appropriations committee staff from the [Republican] House and the [Democratic] Senate would then take the two offers and mesh them such that a little was taken from a, a bit from b, and the final top-line number was somewhere in between.” The end amount will be roughly around the $32 billion in cuts that House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) initially proposed in his continuing resolution.

Biden, the aide added, had been “helping to reach this understanding with phone calls to the GOP side.”

That a rough roadmap for resolution of the funding difference had emerged certainly provides a more upbeat backdrop than other recent reports, which had negotiations between the parties essentially dissolved. But while “all parties were now back at the table" -- as another Senate aide put it -- resolution still remains far off.

For starters, the first Senate aide relayed that the party has not yet received a proposal from House Republicans detailing their $36 billion in cuts. Japan Told To Consider Widening Evacuation Zone Around Nuclear Plant

Pressure mounted on Japan on Thursday to expand the evacuation zone around its stricken nuclear power plant while officials said radiation may be flowing continuously into the nearby sea, where contamination was now 4,000 times the legal limit.

In the first data on the impact of the devastating earthquake and tsunami that triggered the nuclear crisis, Japanese manufacturing slumped the most on record in March as factories shut down and global supply chains were broken.

The damage to the world's third-biggest economy from the quake and tsunami alone could cost more than $300 billion, making it the world's costliest natural disaster, and a report from a Wall Street investment bank said nuclear-related compensation claims could reach more than $130 billion.

Both the U.N. nuclear watchdog and Japan's nuclear safety agency said the government should consider widening the 20-km (12-mile) zone after high radiation was detected at twice that distance from the facility.

Yet at 6.10pm on Monday evening Robert took his first foothold on the world’s tallest tower with one aim — to reach the top.
Half an hour later VIPs and dignitaries took their seats at Burj Island Park in downtown Dubai for the opening ceremony of the tenth annual Education Without Borders (EWB) conference as Robert reached nearly halfway up the tower and stopped for the first of three rests.
Almost half an hour later he resumed his ascent in darkness under spotlight as the night turned chilly and the wind increased.Robert’s climb of the 828 metre tower was to inspire over 2,000 students who descended on Dubai on Monday for the three day EWB conference being hosted by the Higher Colleges of Technology.
“I’m doing this to show the students there is no edge or borders and to inspire people to break the mould and not limit themselves,” said Robert. “Part of my message is not only to follow your heart but try to innovate in all things you do.

The Freeway Series has historically pitted the Angels and Dodgers against each other prior to the start of the regular season. Since interleague play, it has lost its sizzle, but it was quite a thrill watching Angels prospects Mark Trumbo, Mike Trout and Hank Conger all chip in on group deflating of Jonathan Broxton in front of 19,000 paid attendance at the stolen land of Chavez Ravine and listening to Vin Scully bemoan the botching of a routine grounder by Dodger prospect Ivan DeJesus Jr.

It might be Vinny's last year, it might be Frank McCourt's last year and it might be new manager Don Mattingly's last year if he keeps wheeling out gasless Broxton to face major league hitters with the game on the line.

Meanwhile the future looks bright ahead for the guys wearing red as the top prospects list came to life in the ninth inning when, with one out, Mark Trumbo, slated to be the starting 1B for LA of Anaheim because of a growing foot on the part of Kendry(s) Morales, hit a single to RF and was close to being thrown out on a DP grounder off of the bat of Alexi Amarista. With runners on 1B and 3B, Mike Trout singled as the SS covered 2B and the game was tied. Amarista then scored form 3B on a sacrifice fly to the warning track by Hank Conger. 2011 Dodgers Player Profile: Juan Uribe, The Costly Upgrade

Heading into the offseason, the Dodgers identified their top needs as starting pitching (only Clayton Kershaw and Chad Billingsley were signed) and a middle infielder.  In 2010, Dodgers' second basemen were underwhelming, hitting a combined .253/.339/.330 with three home runs. The Dodgers decided to upgrade from Ryan Theriot, who was arbitration eligible, and did so with free agant Juan Uribe, fresh off a World Series win with the Giants.

But oh, what a price the Dodgers paid.

Uribe was a valuable player for the Giants in the last two seasons. He hit a combined .266/.318/.464, a 105 OPS+, with 50 doubles and 40 home runs in 2009 and 2010 combined, and played all over the infield. Uribe started 131 games at shortstop, 56 games at second base, and 55 games at third base in two years with San Francisco. Not bad for somebody who signed a minor league deal before 2009, and made a total of $4.25 million in two years as a Giant.

The Dodgers signed Uribe for a whopping three years and $21 million. His versatility played a part in his signing, as the Dodgers have the injury-prone Casey Blake at third base and Rafael Furcal at shortstop, and although both have options for 2012, it seems likely that at least one of them, if not both, won't be back next year. Even this year, though the plan is for Uribe to play mostly second base, Uribe will open the season at third base with Blake on the disabled list.

On one hand, Uribe seems like a clear upgrade over what the Dodgers had last year at second base, even if a few of the projections below might suggest otherwise. Much like the case with Rod Barajas, the Dodgers appear to have traded some on-base percentage for power. But even if one accepts that Uribe is in fact an upgrade, giving him the richest contract this winter for a second baseman seems like a risky venture....

A rep for the Princes confirmed that a "stag party" had taken place, but divulged absolutely nothing else. Tabloids had speculated the party would include boating and water sports on the English Channel.

A source at the party said (via Us magazine) "she was onstage for most of the night performing for all her friends. No one knew she was going to go up there and perform with them, I think she just loves to be on stage and doing what she does so well."

Apparently there were several birthday cakes at her party, and while she wasn't at the mic in her sparkling black dress, she walked around and gabbed with her friends while nibbling on cake. "She was walking around saying hi to everyone," the source said. "It was an amazing night."

As reported by The Examiner, Last April Fool’s Day, McHale somehow managed to shut down RyanSeacrest.com and hacked into Ryan Seacrest’s Twitter account! He even replaced Ryan’s photos to ones of himself and tweeted, “Anyone know how to bake cookies?”

Last year there was another April Fool’s Day prank on Twitter. Singer Joe Jonas decide to fake out his fans by saying that he broke his leg.

Justin Bieber also joined in on pranks last April 1st. On the very funny website Funny or Die, a message was posted that said: ”Justin Bieber has decided to buy Funny or Die and do with it whatever his tiny little heart desires.” A video clip featuring Bieber shows the singer saying, “I’m a star. Nurse Jackie Season 3: Expect More Drugs, Lies and Relationship Mishaps

Nurse Jackie Season 3 is officially here, and viewers have a lot to look forward to in the 12-episode season.

Season 3 picks up right on the same scene where Season 2 left off – Jackie (Edie Falco) staring into the bathroom mirror after Dr. O’Hara (Eve Best) and Kevin (Dominic Fumusa) confronted her for abusing drugs. As co-creator Linda Wallem stated, this season will not be the season of “Jackie goes to rehab.”



Instead, viewers can look forward to more drugs, lies and relationship mishaps. The 12 episodes will delve further into Jackie’s drug addiction, while simultaneously opening up the show to the supporting cast. We’ll see drug dealers of the past show up to stake their claim in Jackie’s downward spiral of a life. Yet, she still keeps All Saints working like clockwork.

Thor (Stephen Wallem) steps up in a major way, easily grabbing laughs and empathetic smiles as his bond with Dr. Cooper (Peter Facinelli) goes through a subtle metamorphosis. We’ll also see Stephen’s singing chops displayed in the last two episodes of the season.

In Season 2 we saw the beginnings of Zoey’s (Merritt Wever) relationship with Lenny (Lenny Jacobson). We’ll see how their relationship progresses in the third season, however don’t expect anything too deep. The creative team has given Wever just enough room to flex some different qualities in Zoey’s character. For starters, we start to see Zoey take on some more Jackie-like qualities. You’ll have to tune in to see what happens.

Dr. Cooper antics once again come in abundance. His relationship with Eddie (Paul Schulze) will take a subtle turn, and we’ll see just how strong or weak their friendship is by the finale. Also, Dr. Cooper’s two moms will make an appearance, which may shake things up and add an overdose of family laughs. Don’t worry. Coop is still as childish as ever. Although there will be more drama, it doesn’t come at the cost of any of the dark humor.....
