Several hundred people gathered at the Washington Monument on a cold evening, some holding Japanese flags or signs of support.

Japanese Ambassador Ichiro Fujisaki told the crowd that his country needs help.

"Everything started on what I call 3/11 – earthquake, tsunami and nuclear incident – and we are still struggling," he said. "This is a very tough fight, but the consolation is people around the world are trying to be with us."

Fujisaki said the U.S. sent one of the first rescue teams and military support.

"Really, we need your assistance, and you're giving that to us," he said.

After a gathering and moment of silence, the ambassador joined a crowd in walking to the cherry blossom trees along the Tidal Basin, holding glow sticks. Donation bins lined the sidewalk to benefit American Red Cross relief efforts.

Toshiko Saidel of Maryland brought her three daughters to support the nation where she was born. "A lot of people are suffering right now," she said. "We just want them to know we support them."

IRVING, Texas — The Texas Lottery admits that a clerical error is the reason two people thought they recently won 2011 Dallas Cowboys Season Tickets.

Delvin Delamar, 38, mailed in a losing scratch-off ticket for a second-chance drawing — and won.

In a letter dated November 2, the Texas Lottery told the Irving father that he won the chance to be with Jerry Jones and coaches on Draft Day in the Dallas Cowboys War Room.

That letter also said “the prize includes a pair of 2011 Season Tickets… located in the Club Seat Section between the 30 yard lines!”

The total value of Delamar’s prize is $66,667, according to the letter.

Turns out, it wasn’t all true.

“They called and told me that ‘Look, we messed up,’” Delamar said.  “There’s been a mistake in the letter that they cut-and-pasted it, and did it so quick that they messed up on the letter and I did not win the season tickets.”

Delamar won that Draft Day package — just no season tickets. That part was mistakenly pasted into his letter.

The same thing also happened to an Amarillo woman, News 8 has learned.

The Texas Lottery said this was an unfortunate — and rare — incident. No one at the commission could remember such a mistake in recent memory.

“I hope [Delamar] understands that people do make mistakes, and we stepped up to the plate when we made ours,” said Bobby Heith, Texas Lottery spokesman. “We do pride ourselves on the integrity and security of our games and what we do here. ”

Heith said despite what the letter said, the Lottery only awards one prize for each drawing; Delamar’s is the Draft Day package, which he has already claimed.

On Monday afternoon, a “corrected letter” arrived in Delamar’s mailbox explaining his winnings.

Unless he buys tickets himself, he’ll have to watch the Cowboys on TV.

The 38-year-old remains a faithful football fan, but is uncertain if he’ll continue to spend $50 to $100 a week playing the lottery.

Nook Color update will bring apps, Flash

The Nook Color will be getting access to a custom Barnes & Noble app store and Flash support in April. That would mean you can play games and watch Flash video and more from the eReader.Right now you can root the Nook to get these features but according to the Home Shopping Network the features will get official next month. The new B&N app store will be interesting if it has good apps in it. The official date for the launch of the app store and the update isn’t offered.
Apparently, the update for the Nook Color will be sent out automatically to devices on a WiFi network. HSN says that some of the apps include Angry Birds, Lonely Planet Phrasebook, and Drawing Pad. The device will also get integrated email support without needing a web browser. Sounds nice and makes the $299 Nook Color more appealing too.

Does Earth Hour Truly Benefit the Environment?

Earth Hour will be taking place this Saturday, March 26th, between 8:30-9:30pm local time.  Call it an initiative, campaign, or annual ritual, its going onto its fifth year.  People are encouraged to turn their lights out for one hour to bring attention to global sustainability issues.

Earth Hour is lead by the WWF.  No, not the (defunct) World Wrestling Federation.  I am talking about the World Wide Fund for Nature, whose mission is “to halt and reverse the destruction of our environment.”  In 2007, Earth Hour was started by WWF and the Sydney Morning Herald.   Over the past five years, Earth Hour has grown to a global reach.

Earth Hour is attracting big cities, companies, and small organizations alike.  Led by Caesars, casinos on the Las Vegas strip, known for bright lights and flashing signs, will go dim.  Arenas and venues around the world managed by AEG will also be participating.  Walgreens will turn off lights at 1,400 stores. Coca-Cola is switching off massive billboards in Piccadilly Circus and Times Square, and dozens of other global brands will make at least some effort to switch off lights.

The message is even being spread via social media, receiving where #EarthHour gets tweeted a few times a minute, leading up to the event.  With all the hoopla of Earth Hour, one must ask the question, does Earth Hour actually benefit the environment?

The short answer is yes.  As long as people and companies are participating in Earth Hour of their own choice, rather than mandate, I am game.  Here are three reasons why Earth Hour may be to our benefit:

Attention –  Seizes our attention, if but for an hour.
Awareness – Bringing awareness of sustainability issues.
Action – Inspiring action towards sustainability, beyond the hour.
Attention and awareness are just a small part.  But the huge component is action.  Let me explain.

Attention
Earth Hour is grabbing the attention of adamant supporters.  Likewise, it is grabbing the attention of just as passionate opposition.  Some folks will participate, and others will actively not.   And I support both sides in their conviction to choose their path.

The key to this particular attention is that Earth Hour gets folks to actively turn the lights off, or keep them on in protest.  At the very least, there will be discussion of the benefits or drawbacks, and the necessity or necessity of Earth Hour.   It’s better to have some dialogue than no dialogue.  What better way to engage our fellow stakeholders?

On a side note, it is amazing how fast and wide Earth Hour has spread.  Studying this more intently may lead insights into how to successfully share a message.

Awareness
Attention gets the eyes and ears.  But once we have the eyes and ears, we need to shift minds.  Some folks may be participating to acknowledge climate change.  Others may be doing so to bring to light wasted evening energy usage.  And yet others may do it to save a buck or two.

The message of sustainability comes with many different parts.  Earth Hour can help us re-examine, re-focus, and re-engage the topics that matter to us.  But at the same time, while it is a good step to be aware, awareness of sustainability issues means nothing if no action is taken.

Action
Once a mind is shifted, there must be action.  Action is the most crucial aspect, but probably the most challenging to do.  It’s great to capture attention and share awareness for that one hour.  But the grunt work of implementing sustainability in our everyday work and personal lives from the other 8,759 hours of the year matters more.  Let’s not let one hour darken the hard work done all year towards sustainability.

So does Earth Hour truly benefit the environment?  Yes, if and only if there is action because of or despite of Earth Hour.  If Earth Hour acts as a celebration of sustainable action taken thus far, great.  It can be a time to reflect on past successes.  If Earth Hour acts as a catalyst for future sustainable action, all the better.   However, I do look forward to the day when we don’t need a special hour to recognize sustainability, but instead, it is embedded in the actions of our everyday lives.

The animal and wildlife conservation group Born Free USA is asking people to be particularly conscious of the vital role birds play in the environmental balance of nature when they celebrate Earth Day on Friday, April 22.
Adam Roberts, executive vice president of Born Free USA, said, “Habitat loss is the single greatest threat to our birds — outweighing building collisions, domestic cat predation, hunting or capturing for the pet trade. There are relatively simple and immediate ways people can help birds and contribute to wildlife conservation and the health of our planet … by creating habitats in your backyard and community.”
Born Free USA’s top tips for creating habitats for birds:
Provide nesting sites: Planting a variety of native trees and shrubs provides optimal protection and nesting sites for birds.
Diversity is key: One of the most important features for birds is structural diversity with shrubs and herbaceous plants that grow under trees and plants at different heights and groupings.

Dead trees serve a purpose. As long as dead trees and limbs do not pose a human safety concern, leave them. They provide habitat for birds such as woodpeckers and bluebirds that use tree holes for nests. Dead limbs also provide “lookout” posts for birds.
Cats versus birds:  Keep cats indoors especially during the bird breeding season when young birds are most at risk while they are learning to fly.
Stop mowing: Or at least set aside some “no-mow” areas of your yard. Many songbirds nest close to the ground in grass and “weeds.” Leaving tall grass areas will help birds such as goldfinches, quail and towhees — and you’ll save on mowing time, expense and pollution.
Create a water source: Look for a 1- to 3-inch-deep basin that can be easily cleaned and has a gentle slope so birds can wade into the water. Keep birdbaths at least 15 feet from other feeding areas and near shrubs or trees for quick escape from predators. Keep water clear of algae, mud or droppings by replacing it every two to three days.

Fayetteville Earth Day 2011 festivities kick off April 16

Earth Day is just around the corner, and some folks are planning a big party a few days early to kick off a two-week celebration of old mama Earth in Fayetteville.

Festivities begin with an all-day “B-Earth Day” party at East Square Plaza on Saturday, April 16 from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. Plans for the event include a slow food festival, an eco trade show, a bike parade, a trail ride, live music, a fashion show featuring designs made with recycled materials, and several other activities.

FFEAC member Mikel Lolley said he plans to do an Eco Passport again this year, a printed guide listing all of the Earth Day-related activities and specials from local businesses from April 16 – 30. Locals who attend the listed activities will be eligible to win prizes.

Fayetteville Earth Day events will conclude with a prize giveaway during Springfest, set for April 30 on Dickson Street.

Ohio State football is an embarrassment … to the SEC

I’ve got $180,000 that says even Southeastern Conference schools would have come down harder on their head coach than Ohio State did on Jim Tressel.

(OK, maybe not all of them.)

The situation was embarrassing to the university before the latest revelations about Tressel.

Now: Complete abomination.

If you’re just dialing in after a day of work and March Madness viewing — it’s tough to be a Buckeye these days — here’s the latest:

The Columbus Dispatch reported that last spring, Tressel forwarded emails with incriminating information about his players to Terrelle Pryor’s handler … err, mentor … while not even bothering to tell his bosses. (Pryor, of course, was one of the players in trouble.)


When asked by OSU officials, Tressel repeatedly denied having any knowledge of the possible NCAA infractions committed by his players, who were selling memorabilia to the owner of a Columbus tattoo parlor under federal investigation for drug trafficking.

Tressel’s stated reasoning for doing nothing: He didn’t want to violate the confidentiality of the investigation, which was an absurd excuse at the time because he had two weeks to act before the confidentiality request was made.

Now: The excuse is beyond absurd, since we know Tressel shared the info with Pryor’s handler, a Pennsylvania businessman named Ted Sarniak. Confidentiality only extends to your employer, apparently.

Think about that for a second: Tressel wouldn’t inform OSU officials of a possible NCAA violation, and even lied to them, but he did inform Pryor’s handler.

But here’s the worst part:

Not only did Ohio State president Gordon “foot in mouth” Gee and athletic director Gene Smith know that Tressel tried to cover up a violation, not only did they know he lied repeatedly … but we can assume they also knew Tressel had forwarded the email to Pryor’s handler.

And they only suspended him two games!

(The suspension has since been increased to five games, but only after the NCAA denied the players’ appeal to have their five-game penalty reduced to two.

(Rest assured, if the appeal had been granted, OSU wouldn’t have added three games to Tressel’s total.)

Although it never said specifically in the Dispatch story, we can assume that at the time the initial two-game suspension was handed out, Gee and Smith knew about Tressel forwarding the email to Pryor’s handler.

And we can assume this because:

1) The school had searched Tressel’s emails and it presumably would have found the one sent to Sarniak, and

2) When Tressel was asked during the sham of a press conference if he had told anyone about the incriminating emails, Smith … well, here’s the Dispatch’s account:

During a news conference on March 8 to announce NCAA ethics violations by Tressel, the coach said he kept the information to himself to protect the confidentiality of the federal investigation and for the safety of his players.

But Tressel also nodded his head and said “um-hmm” when asked whether he had forwarded the emails to anyone.

Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith quickly intervened to prevent Tressel from answering that question about the matter currently under investigation by the NCAA.

Why would Smith intervene in that manner if he didn’t know the answer — if he didn’t know that Tressel had forwarded the email to someone else — someone who wasn’t a school official?

(And if they really didn’t know at the time, they have since found out. And done nothing.)

So for those scoring at home:

Covering up possible NCAA violations … not informing your bosses about incriminating information but forwarding that same info to the handler of your star quarterback … and repeatedly lying about everything — all that only warrants a two-game suspension!?!?!

Even the SEC has higher standards.

Congrats on that, Buckeyes.

Now it’s up to the NCAA, which must view TresselGate as manna from heaven after the PR bashing it took over the Newton case.

Ohio State’s embarrassing handling of the situation has given the association’s enforcement and compliance divisions a perfect chance to show they’ve got some teeth.

The NCAA has the authority to increase Tressel’s suspension. If it passes, it might as well fold up shop.

Kentucky Wildcats Defeat Ohio State Buckeyes 62-60

NEWARK, N.J. -- Brandon Knight did it again.

Knight knocked down a jumper with 5 seconds remaining as the fourth-seeded Wildcats stunned top-seeded Ohio State 62-60 on Friday in the East regional semifinals.

Senior center Josh Harrellson held his own against Ohio State super freshman Jared Sullinger, scoring 17 points and grabbing 10 rebounds as the Wildcats (28-8) advanced to play North Carolina on Sunday for a trip to the Final Four.

Knight, who knocked down a game-winner in Kentucky's second-round win over Princeton, shrugged off another sluggish performance to drill the biggest shot of his career.

Kentucky coach John Calipari opted not to call timeout after Ohio State's John Diebler hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 60 with 21 seconds remaining, and Knight delivered a silky 15-foot jumper.

Ohio State rushed down the floor, but William Buford's 3-pointer clanked off the rim and the rebound was tapped out of harm's way.

The Wildcats, who struggled to win close games earlier in the season, rushed onto the floor as the buzzer sounded. DeAndre Liggins, like Harrellson a leftover from Billy Gillispie's days at Kentucky, hopped atop a table and pounded his chest as Knight stood at halfcourt and soaked in the moment.

The victory proved sweet vindication for the two holdovers, who were mostly spectators last season as Calipari revitalized the program behind a star-studded freshmen class led by John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins.
