Astroturfed Union Talking Points On Collective Bargaining And ACT Scores

This is astroturf at its finest.  A low-paid intern or first year employee cutting and pasting a talking point into comment sections as they register, too lazy to change it up, and too rushed to bother creating real profiles to post from.

The tipoff for me was the use of educators.  The use of the word "educators" instead of teachers is a code word meant to make you think of the word educate, which is so much sexier than teaching.

The problem is the "statistic," no matter where it came from, is bunk.  Focusing on the students who took the ACT/SAT doesn't cover the whole educational picture.  It covers those most likely to graduate across a state (knowing full well that school districts within a state, and even a city, vary wildly).  It doesn't touch on dropout rates at all.

Let's look at those dropout rates by county, instead of by state, and see what we get.  Here is a list from 2006 in USA TODAY.

Oscar Weekend Roundup Where the Stars Partied

One of the biggest weekends in Hollywood is ending with a bang tonight with the Academy Awards, and it will be an awesome finish to a wild, exciting weekend of partying and even more awards shows. The stars have been partying ahead of the main event, and we've got the scoop! Check it out:

Paris Hilton leaves a pre-Oscar party at Chateau Marmont. (Pacific Coast News)
Weinstein Film's pre-Oscar bash was the spot where Best Actor frontrunner Colin Firth accepted well-wishes for the big night, and it's also where other stars like Taylor Swift (and her new man Chord Overstreet!) hung out, along with Jennifer Lopez, Renee Zellweger, Gerard Butler, Ryan Phillippe, Leonardo DiCaprio and Bar Rafaeli, Cameron Diaz, and more spent the evening!

Meanwhile, a slew of other celebs enjoyed a fancy sit-down meal at Madeo, at the Chanel pre-Oscar bash, reports Us magazine. The guest list at that party included: Emma Roberts, Drew Barrymore and her new man Will Kopelman, January Jones, Naomi Watts, Ginnifer Goodwin, and more!
Peter Travers And Editors Of Rolling Stone Host Awards Weekend Bash - Inside
The Peter Travers and Editors of Rolling Stone Awards Weekend party at Drai's Hollywood is where Jessica Lowndes, Brandy, Mark Salling, Matt Lanter, and more sipped cocktails and smiled for the cameras Saturday night.

Friday night was also nuts at Chateau Marmont, where DJ Jesse Marco provided tunes for stars like Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, who danced the night away and "definitely" kissed a couple of times, reports a source! Also joining the festivities were Scarlett Johansson, Halle Berry, Olivier Martinez, Miley Cyrus and more.

The celebs were all dressed up and looking great, which only further confirms that tonight's festivities will be out of this world! Tune in at 8pm ET/5pm PT tonight for the Academy Awards!

Kate Hudson and Matt Bellamy Buy a London Home

Kate Hudson is putting down some roots with beau Matt Bellamy! The couple, who are expecting their first child together later this year, reportedly just plunked down about $6 million on a home in North London.

An insider explained: "Kate is ready to put down roots in the UK. She is in the process of filling out visa forms that will enable her to live in England with Matt for at least six months of the year. Kate looks at the UK as a great place to raise a family. She sees herself living and working from London for the long haul."

The pair are hoping to move into the property, which comes complete with a nursery, games room and guest rooms, as soon as renovations are complete, and are also looking at holiday homes in Cornwall near the 32-year-old rocker's parents' house in Devon, South West England.

Matt and Kate - who also has a seven-year-old son Ryder with ex-husband Chris Robinson - are said to be so ecstatic about their new home that they have already taken Kate's Hollywood legend mother Goldie Hawn and stepdad Kurt Russell to look around the area.

The source added to Britain's Mail on Sunday newspaper: "Matt and Kate have shown Goldie and Kurt around the area and Matt took them all to Devon to meet his parents. They also looked around Cornwall for a holiday home."

However, Kate recently admitted she was "unsure" about moving to the UK on a permanent basis. She said: "I'll obviously be spending a lot more time in London bit I'm not sure about moving - not yet! We'll probably split it 50/50 - I do love it here and surprisingly I do love the weather. It's so nice to have seasons."

January Jones Reveals Her Off-Duty Pastimes

January Jones is now a big star thanks to her hit show Mad Men, but the actress says she's not really too into the Hollywood lifestyle -- she's pretty happy watching sports and drinking beer while not at work.

January Jones (Photo Agency) She said: "This time of year I sleep in, watch football. I like cricket and I like rugby. I like seeing teeth get knocked out! I'm not a huge Guinness girl – it's too filling. I like a Stella or a Peroni or something like that. Miller Lite. Nothing too fancy. You drink 'em pretty fast."

The 33-year-old star even said she misses watching her favorite games when she travels to places where they're not televised as much. She said: "I remember when I was in London last year it was pretty tough to see football."

January also confessed to a habit of chewing tobacco – but insists she tries to do it in as ladylike a manner as possible. Explaining where she would spit it out, she said: "Not a bucket! A bottle or a cup or something. I tried to be a little discreet. I'm not a total hick."

The blonde star seems unbothered about having a glamorous Hollywood existence, also revealing she likes doing normal things when she's not working. She said: "I'm very good at being off. You know, running errands, having lunch with friends, taking my dog to the park."

Jessica Alba, 'Sex and the City' Ladies Win Razzies

The Oscars honor the best in movies this evening, but last night's Golden Raspberry Awards were all about picking out the worst in film from 2010 -- all in good fun, of course. The flick The Last Airbender cleaned up with 5 Razzies, while Sex and the City 2 also won a few.

Ashton Kutcher won a Razzie (Bauer Griffin)
The 31st Annual Golden Raspberry Awards, which were held at Los Angeles' Barnsdal Gallery Theatre, honored
Sex and the City 2 with the Razzie for Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel, while its leading ladies Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis were given the collective nod for Worst Actress and Worst Screen Ensemble.

John Wilson, founder of the awards, said: "It was released in the middle of a period of American history when everyone's scrounging not to lose their homes. And these women are riding around in Rolls-Royces, buying expensive shoes and just throwing money around like they're drunk."

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart Get Close on the Dance Floor at Pre-Oscar Party

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart apparently cut a rug last night at a pre-Oscar party at Chateau Marmont. The Twilight stars reportedly danced the night away and went "nuts" to the musical stylings of DJ Jesse Marco, reports Us magazine.

Robert Pattinson (Getty) The rumored couple "definitely kissed a few times" during the intense action on the dance floor, reported a source.

These two have been busy filming Breaking Dawn in Vancouver and apparently are back in LA to attend the Oscars tonight. We can't wait to see what they're going to be sporting on the red carpet (Kristen wore a black dress to the party last night), but they probably won't walk the red carpet together...

Hollywood was hopping this awards weekend, and stars like Miley Cyrus, Hayden Panettiere, and Scarlett Johansson also stopped by the Chateau Marmont, while other stars hit up Soho House, Madeo, and more for pre-Oscar parties.

Mandy Moore's Red Carpet Oscar Dress

Mandy Moore's dress she wore to the Oscars was stunning. Absolutely stunning and original and... probably expensive. It was made by Monique Lhuillier and made the hosts of the red carpet stumble over themselves.

Mandy is a modern day Disney princess as the voice of Rapunzel in Tangled. Her song for the movie, "I See the Light," is nominated for an Academy Award and Mandy is performing the song live with Zachary Levi. Catch her later this year opposite Kellan Lutz in First Love, Then Marriage.

But more importantly, LOOK at these pictures of her in that awesome gown!

Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner Get Cozy at the Oscars

A single Scarlett Johansson looked stunning on the Oscars red carpet this evening, and part of that was due to her beautiful gown, and part of that was because of her wide smile while on the arm of Jeremy Renner! The two smiled and touched while the photographers snapped away, leading us to believe they're one of Hollywood's hottest new items.

Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner get cozy. (Getty) These superstars have been pretty discreet about their relationship (if there is one), but we think they make an ultra cute couple! Hopefully there's lots of good things in store for this hot pair.

Speaking of hot: Scarlett wore Dolce & Gabbana on the red carpet and looked quite beautiful in the fuchsia lace. She also sported a messy bob with the look, making her look elegant and playful.

Melissa Leo Held in Suspense By Kirk Douglas Before Winning Best Supporting Actress Oscar

Melissa Leo had become the frontrunner for the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her work in 'The Fighter.' But she still had to sit on the edge of her seat as Kirk Douglas kept stalling from reading the winner's name from the envelope.

Douglas first gave Anne Hathaway complements on her good looks. He then teased nominees by taking detours -- "you know," he kept repeating -- that kept him from revealing the winner. Nominees, including Hailee Steinfeld, Helena Bonham Carter and Leo's 'Fighter' co-star Amy Adams, laughed on. It played like a Ryan Seacrest "after the break" tease on 'American Idol.'He also played with the audience. "Hugh Jackman is laughing. I don't know why everybody in Australia thinks they are funny," Douglas joked, with some awkward pauses in audience laughter. "Colin Firth is not laughing," Douglas followed up. "He's British."

When Leo was finally announced as a winner, she hit the stage and immediately teased Douglas back. "You're pretty good looking yourself. What are you doing later on?"

But when it came down to her actual speech, Leo wasn't as smooth or spontaneous.

"I'm just shaking in my boots here," she said. "Yeah, I am kind of speechless."

The censors then had to get ready to hit the button as she gave a rare Academy Awards f-bomb. "When I watched Kate [Winslet] two years ago it looked so much f----ing easier." Leo quickly apologized backstage for her naughty slip.

THE LILLIAN ROTH STORY

I am really enjoying the old movies that I order from Netflix. Recently I watched the 1954 movie “I’ll Cry Tomorrow”. It stars Susan Hayward. She was one of my favorites back in my impressionable teen years but I’d missed this one.

It is the story of Lillian Roth, a child movie star of the 20’s. She was very successful but her career was hampered by her addiction to alcohol and she spent the latter years of the 1930’s out of the limelight and spiraling deeper into alcoholism. She finally “hit bottom” in 1946 and sought out AA.

Anyone who has read my blog knows that I have enjoyed the past 19 years as a sober member of Alcoholics Anonymous. It has been a huge influence in my life and I was intrigued to watch how (or if) it would work for Lillian. After all, this was 1946 and AA had only been in existence for eleven years.

Sure enough, after contemplating suicide, Lillian finally drags herself to an AA meeting. It was very interesting to see how the members detoxed her. Nowadays this is seldom done except in a hospital or a rehab. I am always fascinated by the really old members of AA who actually remember using small doses of alcohol to taper off a person so they won’t die from DT’s.

Also of interest were the scenes of the actual AA meetings. They were very similar to those that we hold today. What was different was that a man, Burt McGuire, became her sponsor. I can only speak for our area of the country, but here it’s considered best for a woman to have a female sponsor.

Lillian ended up marrying Burt and he became her agent. That is where the movie ended but the rest of her life is just as compelling. In 1953, after much soul searching and against Burt‘s advice, she appeared on an episode of the TV series “This Is Your Life” with Ralph Edwards. In response to relating her story of alcoholism she received more than forty thousand letters.

This is always a tricky thing for us in AA. You would think that a story like hers would be a good way to advertise AA but we advocate attraction rather than promotion. Our 11th Tradition states, in part…”we need always maintain personal anonymity at the level of press, radio and films.” The problem is that so often when a celebrity claims sobriety through AA he or she relapses and there goes the credibility of the program. Burt had tried to explain this to her but she opted to do the TV show anyway.

After 18 years of sobriety Lillian relapsed in 1964 and her sober days and her marriage were over. She spent the final 15 years of her life with 3 dogs and a woman companion. The inscription on her marker in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Westchester County, NY reads: “As bad as it was it was good”.

Herb Ritts

The Day Madonna Met Herb Ritts

Is he gay?" asked Madonna. "Gay men take good pictures of me."

When I worked at the PMK PR firm in 1980, every time we signed a new client, Michael Maslansky (the "M" in PMK) used to have them photographed by Herb Ritts. I'm sure this had more than a little to do with Herb being represented by Michael's wife Marysa, who had a photo agency called Visages, but the photos were always wonderful. I never met Herb until years later when I had my own company and was handling Paul Verhoeven's "The Fourth Man." For an Interview photo, Herb tiptoed me and the film's Dutch femme fatale, Renée Soutendijk, up to the roof above the dilapidated structure that sat on the site of what is now the Chelsea Piers. It was obvious that we were trespassing and that made it fun, but you couldn't help but wonder, "How much time had he spent prowling around all that broken glass and torn metal, before he found that perfect spot?"

"I have no idea if Herb Ritts is gay, Madonna," I said. "But I promise you will Herb Ritts and his "True Blue" Album Coverlike his pictures." As usual, Madonna was busting my balls, but the important thing was that she and Rosanna Arquette were  willing to give up an entire Saturday off from shooting "Desperately Seeking Susan" for the special photography shoot. Ann Lander, the Orion exec in charge of photography had assigned Herb to create some portraits that I could circulate to magazines. If all went well, maybe there would be a poster in there too.

But what should the poster be? What would be a solitary image that would capture the story? If you haven't seen it, the  film is about this bored New Jersey housewife named Roberta (played by Arquette) who follows the personal ads, and is obsessed with a free-spirited type named Susan who uses the personals to keep in touch with her boyfriend. Roberta decides to follow Susan around and when Susan sells her jacket at a thrift store, Roberta buys it, setting in motion a mistaken identity plot. Through the jacket (and a case of amnesia), in a lot of ways Roberta gets to become Susan. The jacket is the engine that makes the whole plot go. So I knew I wanted to display the jacket in a significant way in the poster.

Madonna and Rosanna had totally different kinds of bodies, so Production/Costume Designer Santo Loquasto had made two jackets. But nobody was supposed to know that there was more than one—it would defeat the whole purpose. But something told me that having them both of them in the "Susan" outfits was the way to go. It didn't make literal sense, but I convinced myself it made metaphorical sense: Roberta and Susan were twins, two sides of the same coin, sisters. Both of them stepped into the other one's lives, and tried them on for size.

Nowadays photo shoots like these are a big deal, with limos for talent, and a gaggle of publicists and studio executives, but the only people from the movie were me and the wardrobe supervisor Melissa Stanton (who brought the jackets, costumes and accessories), Herb's crew, and Madonna and Rosanna, who cabbed over themselves. [Why am I so sure they didn't get cars? Because afterwards Madonna complained that she couldn't take the subway anymore. She had only recently reached the level of fame where people hassled her on the trains, and she was pissed off about this intrusion on her freedom.]

Upon my entry to the studio, I was greeted by the sight of Madonna whipping off her shirt to change into another outfit. Nothing modest about this girl. I thought to myself, "that's something very few people will ever see." Little did I know. Melissa was there with the costumes, but Herb didn't seem interested. All day long he put the two of them through pose after pose, none of which had nothing to do with the movie.

Rosanna and Madonna had a peculiar relationship. On one hand they were friends and even hung out together outside of work, but on another… Madonna had a way of sucking all the air out of the room. It's my understanding that the movie was greenlit because Rosanna, red-hot after "The Executioner's Song" and "Baby, It's You," had agreed to be in it. Rosanna was unquestionably the lead and worked practically every day, while Madonna's role was much smaller in terms of actual scenes. But there was no denying that Madonna was Madonna and she was "Susan," in a movie called "Desperately Seeking Susan." Once, when somebody on the street asked who was in the film, I heard Rosanna say, "Madonna."

The truth was, Madonna had the kind of brash confidence that could overwhelm a lot of people, and certainly a more sensitive type like Rosanna. This photo shoot was a perfect example.

Madonna PosterAt one point, Ritts was shooting some sultry glamour shots of Rosanna posing against a cloth backdrop, when Madonna came over. After gaping at Rosanna for a minute she said, "You look so good I'd like to fuck you myself." It was funny, but you could almost hear the air—sssssss!—slipping out of Rosanna's confidence, as her moment was stolen, and it became all about Madonna. And come on! This was Rosanna Arquette, after all—a true fantasy figure for a good portion of the men in America! Moments later, Madonna grabbed the backdrop, commandeered the same pose… and Herb shot an image that became a famous poster.

Eventually it was time for lunch so Melissa and I went out and got some sandwiches. That was catering. "Who wants the tuna?" Madonna played me a track, "Sidewalk Talk," for a compilation album "Jellybean Rocks the House," her boyfriend Jellybean Benitez was producing. She seemed pleased that I liked it, which made me feel good. She often made fun of me on the set, but the truth was I spent a lot of time with her alone, going over pictures in her trailer and in her loft (she lived a few blocks from me) and we got along very well. Her instincts for publicity were amazing even then and I have always considered her one of my mentors. (I've learned a thing or two from other publicists, but the best training comes from natural born salesmen like her.) My favorite story about her was about how she got her manager. She asked who handled Michael Jackson and when she found out it was Freddy DeMann, she called him. Who would have the chutzpah to do that? Freddy signed her.

Herb Ritts' photo of Madonna for Vanity FairLegendary style-setter Andre Leon Talley turned up unannounced and wanted Herb to shoot a photo of Madonna for Vanity Fair. Before I could say anything, Talley put a pair of multi-colored men's boxer shorts on top of Madonna's head and started twisting them around.

This put me in a tough spot because neither Freddy DeMann or Madonna's publicist Liz Rosenberg had approved this. Madonna said I should call Freddy at home and if he said it was okay, she'd do it. As bratty as she could be, in the important ways she was pretty easy to deal with in those days. I'd say, "look, you have to do this now so that you won't have to do it later," and she got it.

It was starting to get pretty late and I decided it was time to put my foot down--I told Herb it was time to shoot the "Desperately Seeking Susan" costumes. After a very long day shooting pictures completely unrelated to the movie, I think he spent an hour or two doing it.   But those few frames turned out to be gold.

As we were getting ready to go, I really did see something that I think very few people have ever seen, at least for a long time. Madonna called Jellybean and they were in the middle of some kind of argument. For a few moments I saw her impregnable shell break away: she appeared to be a normal young woman unsatisfied or hurt by whatever her boyfriend up to. As I had learned that day, showing her breasts wasn't a big issue to Madonna, but showing vulnerability definitely was: as soon as she spied me looking, she tucked that honest emotion back into whatever place she kept them in, and was "Madonna" again.

The Howling Brandon Rios TKO 10 Miguel Acosta

Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios lived up to his nickname by rallying from a slow start to clawhammer Miguel Acosta in the 10th round of a vicious firefight at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Rios, 134 1/2, charged Acosta from bell to bell with limited success early on, but he eventually caught up to his frail opponent and scored the kind of stoppage that simultaneously thrills and disturbs.
For four rounds, however, Acosta, also 134 1/2, punished Rios with straight rights, left hooks, an occasional uppercut, and lead lefts to the body. Rios had his moments here and there, but he looked like he was out of his depth early. A couple of left hooks to the body seemed to visibly affect him. It was no surprise when Acosta began to paste Rios with everything but the girl. “Bam Bam” is a poor defensive fighter and punches from all angles hit him like brickbats hurled by an angry street mob.
Acosta, Caracas, Venezuela, landed a crushing right late in the third that brought a goofy smile from Rios. But he would find nothing amusing in the fourth round, when Acosta sat down on his punches a little more and whacked Rios around the ring with cruel precision for nearly three minutes. Rios, perhaps for the first time in a very long time, found himself abandoning his pressure game and backing off. Just before the bell, a stiff combination appeared to shake him, and he trudged back to his corner with a discouraged look on his face. For his part, Acosta returned to his stool looking more than a little winded.
In the fifth round Rios, Oxnard, California, came out at the sound of the bell and redoubled his efforts, digging to the body whenever he could and mixing it up with Acosta along the ropes. But after five rounds Acosta was comfortably ahead on the scorecards. His movement kept Rios off-balance and his right hand appeared laser-guided at times. Still, Acosta, 32, would occasionally lay on the ropes to draw leads from Rios, a dangerous game to play with a puncher, and every now and then his moves seemed to lack purpose. Wasting energy in the ring against a give-and-take fighter who figures to keep the pressure up for as long as he can is an error in judgment.
In addition, Acosta appeared to be throwing change-ups in the early rounds, alternating quick but weak flurries with hard shots here and there. He might have been better off digging in and throwing heat more often. When he did, as in the fourth round, Rios, 24, was staggered by his shots. His biggest mistake, however, was holding his hands too low while exchanging.
Barely half a minute into the sixth round, Rios landed a three-punch combination punctuated by a jab that decked Acosta, who beat the count but looked ragged for the rest of the fight. Over the next round a half, Acosta deked and ducked when against the ropes, countered well in spots, and ran off eye catching combinations, but exchanging punches in close with Rios is drunken wisdom at best. And soon Acosta was tipsy again, when a rampaging Rios floored him with a left in the 8th.
With his legs unsteady for the reminder of the fight, Acosta tried his best to ward off his storming opponent, but Rios is nothing if not relentless. From time to time Acosta would land a combination, but there was little power behind his blows, and Rios walked right through them. Ripping shots from head to body and back again, Rios marched forward with the inexorability of Fate.
Finally, in the 10th round, Acosta opened up too much and for too long, and Rios connected with an overhand right that made Acosta curtsy in the ring. He was badly hurt by the blow. Acosta did not hit the canvas, however, but popped up raggedly again, defenseless against the ropes, where Rios ripped a vicious combination–a right, a left to the chest, and another whiplash right–that landed with sickening force.
Acosta collapsed in his own corner, his right leg pinned beneath him at a strange angle, where one of his seconds dove through the ropes to embrace his fighter, a white towel in his hands and a look of anguish on his face. It was a brutal stoppage and Acosta remained seated on the canvas–as still as a daguerreotype portrait–for a moment. He recovered enough to conduct a post-fight interview with Jim Gray, but Acosta, who slipped to 28-4-2, was later removed from the ring on a stretcher.
With the win, Rios, now 27-0-1, overcame his most dangerous opponent, showed resiliency and heart, thrilled a small crowd and a Showtime television audience, and gets to keep on doing his victory shriek for a little while longer…at least until its echo overwhelms him.

Brandon Rios Knocks Out Miguel Acosta For WBA Lightweight Title

LAS VEGAS/GRAND ISLAND Neb. In an all action fight, Brandon Rios captured the World Boxing Association (WBA) Lightweight championship from Miguel Acosta via 10th round knockout in the first night of a stacked 2011 lineup for SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® and SHOWTIME PPV®. In the evening’s co-feature, Antonio DeMarco won a unanimous decision over Reyes Sanchez.

“A star was born tonight,” said Hall of Fame Top Rank promoter Bob Arum as Rios (27-0-1, 19 KOs) thrilled the crowd with an action-packed performance and 10th round knockout victory over Acosta at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. The 32-year-old Venezuelan had the early upper hand over Rios by moving around the ring and landing hard punches to the head. Acosta (28-4-2, 22 KOs) was able to stifle Rios’ game plan by boxing the brawler with a strong jab through the first several rounds. But by the end of the fifth, Rios finished with a flurry and walked back to his corner with a sense of confidence that shined throughout the rest of the fight.

In the sixth, Rios, 27, was finally able to force Acosta to engage in an inside scrap. Rios, the naturally larger fighter, started unloading his heavy hands and eventually dropped Acosta with a left jab. “I’ve got a pretty good jab … when I use it,” joked the predominantly come-forward fighter.

The knockdowns didn’t stop there. Rios, fighting out of Oxnard, Calif., continued to apply pressure and forced an off-balance Acosta to the canvas with a left in the eighth before pleasing the pro-Rios crowd in the 10th with a knockout punch that landed Acosta off his feet for the final time at 1:14 in the 10th round.

With tears of joy in his eyes after the fight, the newly-crowned champ showed tremendous modesty in his reaction. “I proved I’ve got a good chin now,” Rios said with a smile. As for what’s next for Rios, the determined fighter said he would fight anyone in the lightweight division. “Whatever Bob Arum wants,” said Rios as Arum looked on with a proud smile.

Following his first loss since 2003, a disheartened Acosta admitted, “I’m more sad than hurt. I prepared for the fight but Brandon Rios has power.”

Though in vastly different locales, the SHOWTIME sweet science scenario in the Midwest featured the same division as Las Vegas. In front of a near sellout crowd of 6,000 at Heartland Events Center in Grand Island, Neb., lightweight DeMarco (25-2-1, 18 KOs) earned his position as the mandatory challenger for the WBC lightweight belt by defeating a game Sanchez.

In the opening minute of the 12-round distance bout between two Mexican fighters, DeMarco landed a big left hand that opened a cut above Sanchez’ left eye. The third round featured DeMarco scoring with a left hook that brought Sanchez (20-4-1, 11 KOs) down before referee Vic Drakulich correctly ruled it a slip. The gash and near knockdown, however, had little impact on Sanchez as the cut fighter proceeded to back up DeMarco throughout the second half of the fight. Though aggressive, Sanchez’ punches were slow, soft and caused little to no damage.

Sanchez kept the fight competitive but eventually lost a unanimous decision by the scores of 116-112, 117-111, 115-113.

Coming off of his first career loss to Edwin Valero one year ago, DeMarco didn’t have the dominant performance he hoped for against the long and lanky Sanchez but showed poise throughout the fight in contrast to his barroom brawler days of yesteryear on ShoBox: The New Generation.

Said DeMarco: “Sanchez is a great fighter and he threw a lot of punches. It was a great fight. I love fighting in Nebraska. The crowd was really into it. That really motivated me.”

As part of the crowd, former world champions Frank Tate and Leon Spinks looked on from Nebraska where the state held its first night of boxing in three years. In contrast, the host of countless boxing matches, Las Vegas, featured some current boxing stars in the crowd including Urbano Antillon, who will rematch Humberto Soto after their 2010 fight of the year barnburner on the May 7 Manny Pacquiao-Shane Mosley undercard on SHOWTIME PPV, and Rios’ stablemate Nonito Donaire.

Tonight’s lightweight action will replay on Tuesday, March 1, at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT on SHO Extreme and be available On Demand beginning March 1 through March 14.

Steve Albert called the action with Al Bernstein serving as expert analyst and Jim Gray as ringside reporter in Las Vegas, while Curt Menefee handled blow-by-blow in Nebraska with Steve Farhood on hand for color commentary.

Brandon Rios Rallies and Knocks Out Miguel Acosta

It went as it was expected from both sides, but at the end of Saturday night's lightweight main event at the Palms in Las Vegas, Brandon Rios was left with his undefeated record and the biggest win of his budding career. Rios knocked out Miguel Acosta in the 10th round of a spirited battle that is an early contender for 2011 Fight of the Year.

Rios (27-0, 20 KO) was in trouble early in the fight, as Acosta (28-4-2, 22 KO) won the opening four rounds with his superior boxing skills and excellent movement and counter-punching. The Venezuelan slickster just looked to be the better boxer on this night, and it appeared that he was headed for an eventual knockout victory of the plodding Rios.

But Rios would not relent, and eventually, caught up with Acosta enough to start doing serious damage. In the sixth round, a three-punch combination ended with a short left hand that put Acosta on the mat, the first really significant change in momentum for the Mexican-American in the bout.

Acosta rebounded in the seventh and eighth rounds, but late in the eighth was caught and knocked down once again. In the ninth, Rios and Acosta slugged away at one another until it appeared neither would have much left, with Acosta looking worse for wear. That proved out in the 10th round, as Rios brutalized Acosta and finished him off with a hard knockout flurry.

I'm not going to go overboard and proclaim that the sky is the limit for the 24-year-old Rios. I think Miguel Acosta was overall the much better fighter in this fight. But what matters is the result, and Rios plugged away and pounded and battered and absorbed hard shots, sapping the life from Acosta and ultimately knocking him out clean. It was a star-making sort of performance for a kid who has a lot of potential to be a star. He doesn't need to win every fight for that to happen, and expectations shouldn't go wild. Will he ever be a "pound for pound" contender? It's highly unlikely. But he is an action star, and action stars mean dollar signs. They also mean great fights.

So in that sense, yes, Rios has a big future. His true prime may be fairly short, because he's so reckless, so brave, and so stubborn as a fighter that eventually the punishment is likely to pile up. But right now, he's proving that even if he's not a great technician, he is at the top of his game. His chin proved out as he took many hard shots from Acosta, who can punch, and when faced with a top-of-the-line foe, Rios came out standing tall. He did it because he's just that tough. He is the heir apparent to his stablemate Antonio Margarito.

As far as his personality goes, here's what I can hope, and what I will hope, because I want to believe in it. I hope we never see another "incident" like last November from Rios again. He's too likable otherwise, too good a fighter, too tough. If there is justice in this world, we should be comfortable counting Brandon Rios as a favorite fighter. I want to. Don't you?

In defeat, Acosta has nothing to hang his head over -- nothing at all. He fought a good fight and just succumbed to a powerful young man who wasn't going to take no for an answer. He's a terrific fighter, which says all the more about Rios' victory. Both men deserve hats off for their excellent performances in this fight.

In the televised co-feature from a packed Heartland Events Center in Grand Island, Nebraska, Antonio DeMarco outpointed Reyes Sanchez over 12 rounds of some of the sloppiest boxing you'll ever see on one of America's big three boxing networks. DeMarco improves to 25-2-1 (18 KO), while Sanchez falls to 20-4-1 (11 KO). It was an entertainingly ugly fight -- "bowling shoe ugly," you might say. They had a tendency to scrap hard for the last 10 seconds of most of the rounds, but otherwise there was very little by way of clean, effective punching. Sanchez had no zip on his fastball and DeMarco fought far too tentative. The win puts DeMarco in line for a shot at the winner of May's rematch between Humberto Soto and Urbano Antillon. If Soto wins, he and DeMarco have said they won't fight one another, as they are cousins. If Antillon beats Soto, DeMarco could be in for a world of trouble. He was smothered all night by Sanchez, which is exactly what Antillon would try to do to him, and Antillon can punch and is simply a far better fighter than Sanchez. The young Sanchez gave his all in this fight, he just wasn't ready for this caliber of opponent yet. The Nebraska fans booed the decision, but it was the right call. This was probably a fight that did look different live, though, and I guess if you really favor aggression, you could argue Sanchez won. Again, neither of them did much clean punching.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest "Three actors hold keys to unlock story's power

The action of Ken Kesey's "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" centers on a battle of wills between Randle McMurphy, a convict who thinks a trip to the state mental hospital will be an easy way to ride out his sentence, and Nurse Ratched, who runs the ward with a calm smile and an iron fist. But, in some ways, the key character is Chief Bromden, the ward's longest-tenured patient, who serves (in the novel and to a lesser extent in the play) as the story's narrator. His relationship with McMurphy and the contrasting arcs of their fortunes are the heart of the matter.

Mac, Big Nurse and Chief Broom -- as the characters also are known -- are the keys to the story's power. Here's a look at the actors tasked with bringing them to life onstage.

Port Macquarie

The location of Port Macquarie was first exposed by Europeans in 1818 when John Oxley reached the Pacific Ocean after his voyage to explore inner New South Wales. He appointed the location after the Govenor of New South Wales, Lachlan Macquarie.

The actual penal settlement was founded in 1821 under Captain Francis Allman who landed at the “town green” at the top of what is now Clarence Street.

Captain Allman immediately began supervising the first 60 convicts sent to establish the settlement, to clear the area of trees and begin farming in order to become self-sufficient. The large metal pipes near the jetty are actually letting out water from an underground river located directly underneath the hotels opposite. Tonnes of sand was lugged up in buckets by the convicts from the beach to fill in the marsh lands that were there.

This settlement was to replace Newcastle as the destination for convicts that had committed secondary crimes such as insolence, drunkenness, refusal to work, violence, or other crimes committed, and so called secondary as it was punishment on top of his sentence. These punishments, referred to as secondary punishments, included the transfer to a more isolated penal settlement or workstation, in this case, Port Macquarie.

Newcastle, which had satisfied this function for the previous two decades, had lost the qualities required for a place for dumping unalterable criminals, being chiefly isolation, as the Hunter Valley was opened up to farmers.

Port Macquarie, however, with its substantial bushland, harsh terrain and local indigneous people that were offered tobacco and blankets, if they returned escaping convicts provided large amounts of both isolation and hard labour to keep the criminals in control.

Sugar Cane was first grown in Australia on the site by a prisoner from the West Indies and a sugar mill was established in 1824. The penal settlement endured into the early 1840's after the area was opened up to free settlers in 1830. After being hard hit by the depression in 1840 and the final relocation of the remaining convict labour in 1847, the settlement began declining. The town began to recover in the early 1860's upon the arrival of pastoralists and by the 1880's the town had a Catholic Church, a bank, a newspaper and local government was formed in 1887.

The North Coast Railway passed by Port Macquarie in 1910 changing the way goods were transported marking the end of the town’s harbour traffic. Throughout the 1960's the town experienced rapid growth and its popularity as retirement spot was beginning to manifest. Today the town has more than 40,000 residents and is a popular tourist destination and the old buildings that remain are a testament to the towns colourful history.

UFC 127 Results: B.J. Penn and Jon Fitch Fight to Draw

Jon Fitch must feel hellafied frustrated. B.J. Penn just feels lucky. All in all, UFC 127 was one of those cards that makes you think it is time for Dana White to start examining some free TV. 50 bucks was a stretch for this one.

The wrap-up from Sherdog:

“I thought [I deserved the win],” Fitch said. “I gave some positioning in the first two rounds, but I came back and did enough to at least win a split decision.”

Penn surprised the American Kickboxing Academy standout with his game planning. The gifted Hawaiian scored with takedowns in each of the first two rounds and secured back control on Fitch, threatening him with chokes from behind. Fitch defended successfully and turned into Penn’s guard on both occasions.

“My cardio was through the roof. It just threw me off. I didn’t train for B.J. shooting takedowns,” Fitch said. “I wasn’t expecting that at all. It took me until the second round to really find my groove.”

Fitch came out firing in the third, as he unleashed a crisp overhand right and transitioned immediately to a takedown inside the first 10 seconds. Penn fought back to his feet, only to be taken down again with 3:44 left in the fight. He never again returned to an upright position. From there, Fitch tore into Penn with elbows, punches and hammerfists from the top. It was the most decisive part of the 15-minute encounter between the two.

“I think I got some dominant positions in the first and second, but he kicked my butt in the third,” Penn said. “If I lost this fight, I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with my career, but since the gods were nice to me and gave me a draw, if he wants to do it again, I’ll do it again.”

UFC 127 Results: B.J. Penn Vs. Jon Fitch Round 1

The main event for tonight's UFC 127: Penn vs. Fitch is, naturally, B.J. Penn vs. Jon Fitch. UFC President Dana White said the winner of this bout was in line for a title shot. Would that be against Jake Shields? Or would it be against someone new? We won't know until UFC 129, but tonight would answer who one-half of the equation would be.

The referee in charge of the action is Herb Dean.

ROUND 1 - before the round even starts, Fitch looks much larger than Penn. Penn closes the distance immediately and goes for a takedown against the fence. The fighters trade knees inside. Fitch reverses position and goes for a takedown, switching back and forth between a double and single. Now Penn reverses Fitch and takes Fitch to the ground. Then he takes his back...locks up the body triangle. Penn and Fitch hand fight and the Hawaiian nearly lands a rear naked choke before Fitch reverses position in Penn's guard. Fitch now pressing Penn into the cage attempting the takedown. Nothing doing.

UFC 127 results

The co-main event of UFC 127: "Penn vs. Fitch" from Sydney, Australia featured a heavily hyped match-up pitting Michael Bisping vs. Jorge Rivera.

And it certainly came through with the necessary fireworks, as Michael Bisping exacted the revenge he wanted so badly with a second round technical knockout win over Jorge Rivera.

Directly after, he walked up to a rocked "El Conquistador" and told him he needed to apologize for all the shit he talked in the lead-up to the fight. He even spit at Rivera's corner.

"The Count" admitted to his sensitivity in the post-fight interview with Joe Rogan though and said he was sorry for overreacting when the fight was called.

All that said, it was an impressive performance for the British striker, who kept the pressure on the whole way.

Star-divide

It didn't come without a bit of controversy however, not including the post-fight shenanigans. In the opening frame, Bisping landed a clearly illegal knee on a downed Rivera that cost him a point.

The fight was nearly called when Rivera was essentially unresponsive for a short period of time.

As it turned out, the 37 year-old was able to continue and came out with a renewed vigor after the bout was restarted. The overhand right he was looking to land, a la Dan Henderson at UFC 100, just never found a home.

The constant pressure "The Count" was able to apply was too much for the old man to handle, as he gassed and it almost looked as if he let himself get punched out to bring the fight to a close.

An impressive performance from Bisping, who showcased his striking along with his wrestling en route to the technical knockout win. So what's next for the surging middleweight contender?
